My Campaigns

Trisle - fantasy campaign - Trisle is the name of a large island (small continent) inhabited mostly by humans, dwarfs and elves in the world of Pesu. (GURPS Fantasy)
THE - sci-fi campaign - In this cavernous universe, the government (called THE) controls most of the information about how things work. (GURPS Hi-Tech)
Unfair Competition - fantasy campaign - Set on the dry deserts of Athas (Dark Sun), new merchant houses try to make a living. (AD&D 2nd)

Game systems

GURPS

My favorite game system is GURPS. It's a generic system for any genre of games. It's point based where characters are made by buying attributes, advantages/disadvantages and skills. It is very flexible and encourages role-playing. You can take a look at GURPS by downloading GURPS Lite (from here, a skimmed down version of the game.

Dungeons and Dragons

My second favorite game is Dungeons and Dragons, or D&D (3rd edition). D&D is based on a race/class/level system for fantasy role playing games. There have been many sourcebook materials for this game with very detailed description of fantasy worlds. It is the basis of the d20 system as well as may computer games.

Neverwinter Nights - a really good D&D computer game (which, btw, has a Linux version)

Open Games

There are also some open gaming systems around, these are the equivalent of "open source software" for role playing games, some more open than others. Here are some links:

d20 - well known system since it's based on D&D. Rules are compatible. You can download the rules, or System Reference Document from the Open Gaming Foundation (OGF), which also publishes the Open Gaming License. You can find more links and games at the OGF site.
FUDGE - from Steffan O'Sullivan, FUDGE is a generic game, like GURPS and very influenced by it. It is flexible in all aspects. Attribute, skills, etc are described in a 7 level word system, not by numbers.
Dominion Rules - a good Fantasy RPG you can donwload for free.
BASIC Role Playing System - a fantasy role playing game by Chaosium.

History

I started playing RPGs in 1990. I saw some kids playing with some really cool polyhedral dice and wanted to know what they were doing. AD&D 2nd was my first system and a dwarf cleric named Byron my first character. I started on GURPS one day that I went to a friends house to see a Warhammer game, I saw makechar (GURPS character creation program) running and fell in love with the modularity. Never really liked Warhammer though. I've been both a player and a DM/GM.
